An Arkie to be – a Memorial Day road trip

I’ve thought about it and talked about it for a year or so and have recently decided it’s now or never – I’m moving to Arkansas.  I kept thinking Harrison would be a nice central location but once I started checking the mileage from there to various points I realized it was still too far north.  This weekend I signed the lease on an apartment in Fort Smith.  Once I get settled there I’ll get more familiar with the area and look for a house to purchase – probably between there and Russellville.  Of course, I still need to move my stuff and sell my house in KC but that’s just details right?

The Arkansas River valley is situated right between the Boston and Ouachita mountain ranges and seems an ideal place from which to launch many great adventures.  I’m excited at the prospect of eliminating so many hours of driving and making trips to these amazing areas a normal occurrence rather than a special 3-or-4-times-a-year event.  At the same time, I’m kinda bummed about leaving behind the organizations in which I’ve become involved and hope the few friends I’ve made over the years won’t become strangers.  I’ve still got family in the KC area so I’ll be back periodically.

My Memorial Day road trip also included a visit to Mt Magazine (the highest point in Arkansas) and Mt Nebo.  I passed through places with names like Paris, Havana, Charleston, London, and Boston but also Loafer, Nail, and Booger Hollow.  I spent half a day touring Russellville – a possible future home.  I was also able to do a few of the short and scenic hikes that have been on my list for a long time: Pedestal Rocks, King’s Bluff, Alum Cove, King’s River Falls, and the Glory Hole (seriously!).  Stories & pictures coming ASAP.

Michael! I found your blog while looking for a trail map for WyCo. Congrats on the move! I’m sure you’ll love Arkansas, it really is a beautiful and under-rated state IMO. I really do miss your Adventure Club hikes here in KC. Best of luck on your new adventure though!

Thanks Tonya, I’m glad I could be useful and hope everything is going well for you. I hope to do a farewell hike with KCAC but still have much work to do around the house.
