Abatement and a burger

I spent about 4 hours today cutting back small trees along a hiking/biking trail.  It was pretty grassy so I’ll have to return and cut that – the first opportunity to use my new trimmer.  Several acres in one area are being smothered by an invasive olive tree that’s similar in its effects to the hated honeysuckle.  I don’t yet know what to do about that.

I worked up quite an appetite so I went to Jess & Jim’s for a cheeseburger.  Many people say it’s the best in KC.  I’d have a hard time deciding on one best but it’s definitely in the top 5, and the french fries are very good too.  Some of the other great KC burgers are made with McGonigle’s meat but Jess & Jim’s grinds their own every day.  My top 5 KC cheeseburgers, in no particular order:
Jess & Jim’s (cheeseburger + bacon + cheddar)
Big Bam’s Burgers (Ladder 49 + jalepeno)
Jake’s Place (Big Jake + bacon + cheddar)
Chili’s (Jalepeno Smokehouse Bacon Burger)
J Alexander’s

Heat, Humidity, Hills, and Hiking

I spent four days at Blanchard Springs Recreation Area in Arkansas on a trip organized by a local Sierra Club group.

This is in the Ozark National Forest on the North Sylamore Creek near the point where it dumps into the White River.  Hiking, camping, swimming, mountain biking, and fishing are some of the more popular activities and there’s also a cave to explore.

We left early Thursday morning and got down there in time to take the last 1.5 hour walking tour of Blanchard Springs Cavern.  Very impressive.  There’s also a 5 hour Wild Cave Tour that requires jump suits, hard hats, head lamps, and crawling but I guess we weren’t feeling that adventurous.

We then headced over to Blanchard Springs itself to see the spring that formed the cavern springing from the side of a hill.  Lots of great scenery here.

This stream was dammed long ago to form Mirror Lake and provide power for a mill – part of it still standing.  It then runs down into North Sylamore Creek.

Friday, we hiked from Blanchard Springs to the Gunner Pool area.  Saturday we hiked from the east trailhead near the town of Allison back to Blanchard Springs.  One of the highlights was a family of armadillos.

It rained off and on for about 30 minutes late Saturday afternoon, making the air even more humid.  My wet clothes were still wet the next morning but it rained again for about 20 seconds anyway – boosting the humidity enough that there were clouds above us in the trees.  We headed back home with a stop at Fantastic Caverns NE of Springfield.  It was much less interesting than Blanchard Springs Cavern and cost twice as much so I think we were all a bit disappointed.

After a day or two of cleaning and drying clothes, tent, etc I will have to start thinking about the next trip.

Chicago’s Willis Tower

Chicago is an old Potawatomi word meaning “wait in line here” and I got the full treatment at the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower.  I had a few hours between trains and figured I should see it while I was here.

You start with a line outside on the sidewalk.  Then you get inside into another line, then down an elevator and into another line.  Then through security into another line.  Then you buy a ticket ($17!!!) and get in another line for a brief movie.  They eventually let me skip the movie and move to another line – for an elevator.  I finally get to the 103rd floor after an hour an a half and almost as soon as I walk out of the elevator I see another  waiting line snaking around the core of the building.  I figured that was for people that wanted to go out on the sky ledge and decided to pass on that.  After walking around a bit and taking some pictures it became apparent that the line is for people that want to leave!  Having a train to catch and fearing another very long wait, I cut the sightseeing short and got in line.  Luckily, it only took about 30 minutes to get out.

The whole experience would have been better if I wasn’t rushed and didn’t have to  compete with so many people for the view.

So I walk out of Union Station wondering if I’ll be able to find Willis Tower and, well, there it was.

Count the floors.  They’re all there.

The Amtrak Blues

The trip to and from Maryland was my first time on a train.  From KC you first take a 7.5 hour ride on the Southwest Chief to Chicago, then you have a layover of about 3 hours, then hop on the Capitol Limited for a ride of about 15.5 hours.  That’s the theory anyway.  In practice the first leg was fine but the Capitol Limited was late getting to Chicago so we were 2 hours late leaving.  Due to various flash flood warnings the train could only go about 25 miles/hour much of the way and we lost another 3.5 hours.  Instead of arriving in Maryland with plenty of time to rest and freshen-up before the wedding rehearsal, I got there late.  The trip back was on schedule, and features a 6 hour layover in Chicago – which will be the subject of the next post.

My seat was in the upper level of the coach.  There is lots of leg room, overhead reading lights, the seats recline, have leg rests, and the seat in front has a fold-out foot rest, a fold-down tray, and a place to stash magazines, etc.  I do wish the seats were a bit wider, but I also wish I was a bit narrower.  Some cars had 120VAC electrical outlets at each seat, older cars had a few outlets shared by many seats.  Fresh water was available in each car but it tasted a bit funny.  On the lower level of each car are small bathrooms that are similar to what you find on an airplane.  Be careful not to hit your head on the door if you have to sit down!

The train was quieter than I expected and there was a lot of swaying and a few big bumps  but I was able to get some sleep anyway. The food was decent, though pricey.  There was some good scenery, especially in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

All aboard!

The train also went right across the southern end of Lake Erie near Sandusky Ohio but it was not light enough for a picture.  I’ve now seen all the Great Lakes.

I hiked the Appalachian Trail…

…for about 2 hours with my brother the morning of his wedding.  We started at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s Visitor Center in Harper’s Ferry WV (where we got some good souvenirs) and followed the spur south to the actual trail, then headed east through town, across the Potomac River bridge into Maryland, and followed the old canal next to the river until we ran out of time.

I didn’t see more than a tiny fraction of the 2175 miles but it was a start!

There’s a trail that leads to the top of that bluff where you can creep out onto those rocks for a breathtaking view.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have time.

Wedding Bells

Not mine though!  I went to Frederick MD over the weekend for my brother’s wedding and have enough material for at least two more blog posts so those will follow.

The rehearsal was Friday afternoon.  I was expected to be there since I was Best Man but was very late due to “Amtrak issues”.  The wedding Saturday went well as far as I could tell, with everyone remembering what they were supposed to do and say, and no mishaps.  The reception afterward went well too.  My Best man toast was rather short and unimaginative but I guess it could have been worse.  I slipped-in a “live long and prosper” but don’t think anyone noticed.

The bride and groom are honeymooning in the Virgin Islands, with snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking on the agenda.

Blue River Parkway

I went hiking with the Adventure Club at Blue River Parkway again, but this time on some trails along the western edge.  I thought the “Old Railroad Bed” would be fairly dry despite recent rains and I wasn’t very wrong.  The trail runs close to, and parallel to, the river and actually is an old railroad bed so it’s mostly a bit elevated and gravelly.  There are normally areas where you can cross the river to the trails on the east side but the water was way too high (as expected).

Kill Creek Park

Spent an afternoon with the Adventure Club hiking at Kill Creek Park in western Olathe.  We were mostly on the hiking and equestrian trails – the bike trails were a bit too wet.  The rocks I’ve used previously to step across Kill Creek were missing (washed downstream?) so I’m going to have to get back out there to rectify that.  Not wishing to go wading, we took a  long detour.

Landahl Park

I spent much of the day hiking at Landahl Park in Blue Springs with some other KC Adventure Club members.  I’d been on the trails in the north half before and had been looking forward to getting back there.  Unfortunately, the trails were kinda muddy so that shortened our visit to only 3.5 hours.  Fortunately, it meant we had plenty of time to explore the southern half of the park – which was all new to me and was more interesting than expected.  We spent about 3.5 hours more there but left many areas for a future trip.

Trail Work at SMP

I spent a most satisfying 6 hours today at Shawnee Mission Park with 3-6 others from Earth Riders Trails Association building about an eighth mile of new trail.  I’d previously worked only on existing trails so it was interesting to see what goes into a new one.  I spent most of the time using a pick to dig many, many rocks out of the path while others followed – cutting, grading, and compacting the trail surface.  I apparently got into a bit of poison ivy but surprisingly, no ticks.
